Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement, and practice. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. We will work intuitively, responding to what emerges, with less censorship and greater freedom.

There will be daily demonstrations of various techniques for layering acrylic paint and paper. Students will produce two paintings per day, and we’ll discuss them using descriptive language to expand our individual creative voice.

By adopting an attitude of “play”, this workshop will promote greater innovation and receptivity to the small voice of intuition and imagination. We’ll work quickly but without a hurry to finish. With a body of several paintings, we’ll pursue editing solutions for a final product.

A variety of approaches and techniques will encourage beginners and build confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan’s insightful solutions to their artistic challenges.

Joan Fullerton holds a BFA and an MFA in painting from the University of Wyoming. She taught art at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, WY, from 1990 to 2003.

Joan's work has been in galleries, juried shows, and museums since the early ’70s, and she has shown internationally in Italy, Japan, and Nepal. She was published in the 2010 edition of Open Studios Press and the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media book, Visual Journeys, Art of the 21st Century. She was featured in the Spring 2017 issue of Acrylic Artist Magazine and contributed to the bestselling book Radical Self-Love.
