About This Workshop

Students may work with oils and/or soft pastels.

We will explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, color and medium application. Emphasis will be on developing form using light and shadow. My step-by-step method will help you simplify the complicated. If you are bewildered by color or are wanting to speed up and become looser in your work, you will definitely benefit from this class.

At the end of the first day we will have a short photo session with the model. Students can use their digital camera, smart phone or iPad to photograph her. From the many pictures they take, they’ll choose several to work from during class. If using a camera or phone to photograph, we can print out your photos for your reference. If you photographed with an iPad, you may work from the iPad. I do not want you working from your phone.

Please bring $15 cash to the class for the model fee.

Class Schedule:

First day

  • 9:00 - 10:00 – Demonstration

  • 10:00 -12:00 – Morning session with model

  • 12:00 - 1:00 – Lunch

  • 1:00 - 3:30 – Afternoon session with model

  • 3:30 - 4:00 - photo session

Following day(s)
Working from photos

  • 9:00 – 12:00 – Morning session with photos

  • 12:00 - 1:00 – Lunch

  • 1:00 - 4:00 – Afternoon session with photos

Model can show up at 9:45
Friday morning.

In addition to the model fee, I think it’s a good idea to suggest to people to bring cash to tip the model for her photo session. In that half hour of shooting, people can get as many as 200 photos of the model, giving them images to work from for months in their home studios.

Margaret has been featured many times in The Pastel Journal, American Artist, International Artist and The Artist magazine. You can also find her in “Pure Color-The Best of Pastels” I and II.

In the June 2002 issue of The Artist’s Magazine, the author wrote:

  • “Dyer is adamant about what she wants to portray: beautiful—not overtly provocative—figures in action. She tries to avoid languid, sentimental posturing, and prefers to show her model in an unguarded moment, when she’s not worrying about the ‘right pose.’ Dyer’s attention is caught by telling gestures, such as a direct gaze or a hand on a hip… Above all, Dyer seeks to establish an atmosphere and mood particular to the developing painting
